Qualifications

What Are Qualifications

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) are qualifications which prove that people can do their jobs to national standards — having one (or the fact that your staff members have them) is a sign that the services and products you provide are produced to the highest standard, using up-to-date skills and the best working practices.

These SVQs are accredited by SQA and are open to people of all ages at any stage of their careers. People don’t need formal qualifications to start an SVQ, but they do have to be working in a relevant job-role.

What SVQs are there for the food industry?

There are SVQs to cover nearly every aspect of the industry. Traditional areas linked to apprenticeship, such as craft skills, plant operations, processing and manufacturing operations are covered; and there are qualifications from start to finish. For those working at higher levels, there are also qualifications in supervision and management.

Tips for Success

The Modern Apprenticeships in Food Manufacture are a great way to give your employees the skills they need and the opportunity to achieve a work based qualification.

To make the most of the experience, it is best to work with a company that knows your industry well.

We also find that the companies who get the most from the process build the achievement of the qualifications into their training plans.

Case Studies

Since 2005, we have built a close working relationship with McIntosh Donald on a few different projects.  These include the Modern Apprenticeship programme, food hygiene courses, and we are about to put in place workplace trainer courses and internal auditor training.

Pinneys

We have been working closely with Pinneys of Scotland since 2004 on some key projects.  We have fully implemented a Modern Apprenticeship programme, assessor training and workplace trainer.

Client feedback

"Very easy to deal with, very friendly and customer focused. Understand the needs of the company and deliver a first class service".

George Stout,
Jolly's of Orkney.

"Increased knowledge of the staff not only for how they do something but also why they are doing things.  We find the team are bringing issues to our attention rather than management or QA picking them up.  The Polaris Learning Consultant has been incredibly helpful on a number of levels - from highlighting production issues, helping with quality and technical issues and also providing solutions."

Enoch Robinson,
J K Thomson.

"Customers like the fact we invest in additional training not just the mandatory training.  The SVQ programme helps to develop staff and is encouraging for younger members of staff as they feel that we are investing in their future and advancing their skills."

Liz Soutar,
Pinneys of Scotland

"Employees have a better understanding of the food industry due to the training and working with the trainers. The trainer explains the questions when the employee may not quite understand. He will also simplify the questions."

George Finlay,
McKechnie Jess.
