An Introduction to Train the Trainer

Increasingly, supervisors and managers have the important responsibility of passing on their knowledge, and successfully training their team members.

This may be demonstrating the use of a piece of equipment to a new employee, showing a group of people a new safety procedure, or coaching and mentoring team members.

And increasingly, organisations are finding that their clients and auditors want to know that supervisors and managers are competent to train.

We can help you give your managers the skills they need. And if you prefer, we can also assess their competence in this area.

Presentation Skills & Group Training

If your managers and supervisors give presentations or even train groups of people, then the might benefit from training in these areas.

We can help with short courses on giving presentations or delivering group training.  We can also support employees with work place assignments so that they can apply their skills back in the work place.

We can help you with the training only or we can also asses their competence in this area.

One to One Training

Training that often happens in the workplace can be on a one to one basis.

Many people do not see this as a training skill, especially when compared to the importance and effort placed on giving presentations.

Organisations depend heavily on people learning on the job but it isn’t always realistic to presume that all supervisors and managers have the skills set to deliver effective on the job training.

Our approach is very much hands on, getting the delegates to do as much practical work as possible so that if your organisation do a lot of on the job training, you can see the importance and impact of why those people at the front end need to be given the right skills.

Coaching & Mentoring

Many supervisors and managers are responsible for coaching or mentoring members of their team.

This can be organised through a formal in-house programme or it may be skills that employees are expected to use in their day to day work.

We can help your employees better understand both skill sets, help them build their knowledge and support them as they apply the knowledge in a practical setting.

We can help you with the training only or we can also assess their competence in this area.

Qualifications & Accreditations

You may need to show that not only do your employees have the skills but they also have the qualifications to prove this.  Often you will be asked for evidence employees have completed a ‘train the trainer’ course.

If you are looking for a ‘train the trainer’ qualification for your supervisors or managers, we can help you.  We offer a range of training qualifications from SQA and the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Case Studies

We have been working with Aberdeen International Airport since 1998, and we continue to support a wide range of development for the employees who deliver training within the airport's operations.

This includes qualifications covering different aspects of training from preparing training programmes, delivering training to groups, one to one training, engaging and supporting learners to Assessor and Internal Verifier qualifications.

SQA accreditation has been the preferred option due to the availability and credibility of their qualifications.

We were appointed to roll out a Train the Trainer programme for the ACE Winch Academy trainers, building skills, confidence and providing practical experience through an intensive three day workshop achieving the Institute of Leadership and Management Train the Trainer Award.

The ACE Winch Academy offers a range of training courses focusing on the competent and safe deployment, management, operation and maintenance of winches, spooling operations and deck machinery equipment.

The ACE Winch Academy also offers a series of core courses, as well as bespoke services to meet clients' needs that can be delivered at the ACE Winch Academy facilities or their operational site.

Accreditation for the delivery of ACE Winch training programmes from City & Guilds and Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) has been achieved.

Client Feedback

"The consultants from Polaris Learning have been incredibly supportive to our needs. Given that we have a brand new operation integrated and a large number of individuals undergoing a variety of training programmes the flexibility shown to my planning has been highly commendable!

As with any manufacturing team we have a wide range of characters, who through the training process have been catered as individuals and pitched at the correct level of detail to keep everyone interested and confident as trainers".

Jamie Duckmanton (at the time of feedback)
Production Manager
Baxters Food Group

"Assessors drive the competence program. Training is delivered to a better standard as the Trainers have had a good grounding with requirements to the structure and the development of the training and the delivery.

By using a company that is well recognised in Industry for the delivery of Training and Competence assists in Audits and beneifits employees.

Their delivery of a Quality product, experience of trainers, and their knowledge of the Offshore industry and it's requirements are the reasons why I would recommend their services to another company".

Andy Swinhoe
Group Training Project Manager
KCA DEUTAG

"Individuals now have the confidence and skills required to deliver training to the team, individually or as part of a group.

This is further supported by our trained assessors and verifiers."

Tips for Success

We would not expect training specialists to naturally know how to train.  Yet we sometimes expect supervisors and managers to naturally be able to train.

And some people may be very good technically but struggle to pass on their knowledge.

Who is training?

We find the first step is to recognise who in your organisation has training responsibilities.

This includes anyone who is passing on information, demonstrating how equipment works, showing correct safety procedures or mentoring new recruits or trainees.

Am I any good?

The next step is to look at whether they have the skills to train.  Are you confident that they are able to pass on the information accurately?  Are you sure the trainee has the best opportunity to pick up the information correctly?

Can I prove it?

And in some industries, you may be expected to demonstrate to auditors that the people training are competent to train.  Do you have the evidence to prove this?

Will it work for us?

The next step is to look for training that suits your organisation and your employees.  We find that employees learn better with practical training.

And training that links in to your processes and reflects your products.
